[All snapshots](/data/equipment/archive) ## Analysis · as of August 1, 2026 ### Highlights - Freightliner holds 29.8% of FMCSA-registered trucks, more than Kenworth (13.2%) and Peterbilt (11.9%) combined. - The weighted average model year across 4.43 million registered trucks is 2016, placing the median fleet unit at roughly 10 years old. - Dry van trailers account for 1,538,508 units, representing more than 42% of the 3.59 million total trailers in the FMCSA dataset. - Tank trailers carry the oldest average model year among trailer types at 2012, four years older than the dry van fleet average of 2016. - Ram trucks show the newest average model year among high-volume manufacturers at 2019, while Sterling's 29,502 registered units average a 2006 model year. The most counterintuitive pattern in the FMCSA equipment data is not Freightliner's dominance but the durability of very old iron still on active registration. Trucks from model year 2007 alone account for 142,665 registered units, more than any single model year from 2023 or 2024, and the 2006 cohort adds another 103,027. Combined, trucks 19 years old or older represent a substantial share of the active fleet, which is consistent with smaller owner-operators retaining paid-off equipment rather than taking on new-truck debt during a prolonged freight rate softening cycle. The fleet age picture diverges sharply by manufacturer. Ram's 129,749 registered trucks carry an average model year of 2019, the newest among manufacturers with more than 100,000 units, likely reflecting Ram's growth in the lighter commercial segment where replacement cycles are shorter. At the other end, Sterling, a brand discontinued in 2009, still shows 29,502 active registrations with an average model year of 2006, indicating a long tail of equipment that has simply not been retired or replaced. On the trailer side, the 3.59 million total units skew toward dry van, flatbed, and reefer, which together account for roughly 2.87 million units, or about 80% of the trailer population. Tank trailers stand out with an average model year of 2012, the oldest of any trailer category, four years behind dry van's 2016 average, which may indicate lower capital turnover in bulk liquid and chemical hauling relative to over-the-road general freight. The 2022 model year is the single largest truck cohort in the data at 305,316 units, followed closely by 2020 at 352,149, the latter likely reflecting pre-order activity before supply chain disruptions constrained OEM output.
