[All snapshots](/data/equipment/archive) ## Analysis · as of September 1, 2026 ### Highlights - Freightliner holds 29.8% of FMCSA-registered trucks, more than double the share of second-place Kenworth at 13.2%. - The weighted average model year across all 4.47 million registered trucks is 2016, placing the median truck at roughly 10 years old. - Dry van trailers account for 1,556,648 units, representing more than 43% of the 3.64 million total trailers in the FMCSA dataset. - Sterling, a brand discontinued in 2009, still accounts for 29,660 registered trucks with an average model year of 2006, indicating persistent use of legacy equipment. - Ram trucks registered with FMCSA carriers average a 2019 model year, the newest average among all manufacturers with more than 100,000 units. The most counterintuitive pattern in the FMCSA equipment data is the volume of very old trucks still active in the registered fleet. Despite 284,553 model-year 2023 trucks and 276,522 model-year 2024 trucks in the dataset, there are 143,267 model-year 2007 trucks still registered, a cohort now approaching 19 years of age. The model-year 2007 vintage is, in fact, larger than any single year from 2013 through 2015, suggesting that a meaningful portion of the active fleet predates current emissions standards by a wide margin. The overall weighted average model year sits at 2016, meaning the typical registered truck is approximately a decade old as of the September 2026 data snapshot. On the trailer side, the average model year across all trailer types is slightly newer in some segments, with flatbed-tag trailers averaging 2017 and reefer trailers also averaging 2017, while tank trailers average 2012, the oldest of any major trailer category tracked. That divergence likely reflects the capital intensity and specialized nature of tank trailer operations, where replacement cycles may extend longer than in dry van or temperature-controlled segments, though the data does not confirm this directly. Comparing the two most recent full model years available, 2023 trucks number 284,553 units versus 307,087 for model-year 2022, a year-over-year decline of roughly 7.3% in registered units for those cohorts, which is consistent with the broader softening in Class 8 orders reported across the industry in that period. On the manufacturer side, Freightliner's 29.8% share contrasts with the combined 11.75% held by International, whose average fleet model year of 2016 matches the overall fleet average. Volvo, with 343,188 units and an average model year of 2017, shows a slightly newer fleet profile than its unit count peers, which may indicate stronger penetration in replacement rather than expansion demand. Looking across the full age distribution, the data shows meaningful volume in every model year back to at least 1997, with 38,183 trucks from that year still registered.
