The most counterintuitive pattern in the FMCSA equipment registry is not who leads the market but how durable the long tail of aged equipment remains. Despite a weighted average model year of 2016 across all 4,486,152 registered trucks, a material share of the fleet predates 2010: trucks from model years 2007 and earlier still account for several hundred thousand registrations, with model year 2007 alone contributing 143,502 trucks, the largest single pre-2010 cohort in the data. That vintage cohort is larger than any model year from 2011 through 2014, which likely reflects the pre-emissions-rule buying surge ahead of EPA 2007 diesel standards rather than recent purchasing behavior. On the manufacturer side, Freightliner's 29.8% share across 1,337,105 trucks is spread across 313,947 carriers, a carrier count meaningfully higher than Kenworth's 188,297 and Peterbilt's 166,919, suggesting Freightliner's penetration runs deeper into the small-carrier segment rather than being concentrated among large fleets. Volvo, by contrast, shows 344,389 trucks across only 86,340 carriers, the lowest carrier-to-truck ratio among the top six manufacturers, which is consistent with heavier concentration among larger, fleet-scale operators. On the trailer side, the composition diverges by age in ways that matter for replacement demand. Dry van trailers average a 2016 model year across 1,564,485 units, reefer trailers also average 2017 across 476,337 units, while tank trailers average 2012 across 247,325 units, a gap of four to five years that may indicate lower turnover rates or different financing structures in the liquid bulk segment. The 2022 truck cohort, at 307,800 units, is the largest single model year in the current fleet, while 2021 shows a visible dip to 233,550 units, consistent with the supply-chain constraints on new truck production documented during that period. Over the past decade, new model year cohorts from 2016 through 2020 each reached or exceeded 230,000 registered units, suggesting baseline annual absorption in that range before the 2022 rebound.
