## Analysis

· as of October 1, 2026

### Highlights

- Freightliner holds 29.8% of FMCSA-registered trucks, more than the next three manufacturers combined.
- The weighted average model year across 4.5 million registered trucks is 2016, meaning the median active truck is roughly a decade old.
- Dry van trailers account for 1,571,510 units, nearly three times the count of the next largest trailer category, reefers at 477,822.
- Tank trailers carry the oldest average model year of any trailer type at 2012, four years older than dry vans.
- Battle Motors and White/GMC show average model years of 2024 and 2023 respectively, the newest averages in the manufacturer dataset despite combined totals under 2,700 units.

The most counterintuitive pattern in the FMCSA equipment data is not who leads the market but how durable the legacy fleet has proven to be. Despite 293,234 trucks registered with model years 2024 or newer, roughly 1.08 million trucks in active FMCSA records carry model years of 2007 or earlier, representing vehicles now 19 or more years old. That tail is not trivial: the 2007 cohort alone accounts for 143,736 trucks, making it larger than any single model-year cohort from 2013 through 2015. The persistence of pre-2010 equipment is consistent with the economics of owner-operators and small carriers, who make up the majority of FMCSA-registered entities and for whom capital replacement cycles are longer.

On the manufacturer side, Freightliner's 29.8% share as of October 2026 is nearly 17 percentage points ahead of second-place Kenworth at 13.1%. Peterbilt and International follow at 11.9% and 11.75% respectively, meaning the top four manufacturers account for roughly 66.6% of all registered trucks. Ford's 7.81% share and 158,727 associated carriers likely reflects its prevalence in lighter-duty and vocational segments rather than Class 8 long-haul, since its average model year of 2016 aligns with the fleet median but its carrier count relative to truck count suggests widespread use across small, diversified fleets.

In trailer composition, the flatbed category is more fragmented than the headline dry van number suggests. Flatbed tag trailers (544,833 units) and standard flatbeds (345,349) are tracked separately, and combined they total approximately 890,000 units, narrowing the gap with dry van's 1,571,510 considerably. Reefers at 477,822 units carry an average model year of 2017, one year newer than dry vans at 2016, which may indicate more active replacement cycles in temperature-controlled segments where equipment condition directly affects cargo integrity.

The weighted average model year of 2016 across the full truck population, measured against a dataset running through October 2026, places the average active truck at roughly ten years old. Viewed across a ten-year horizon, this average has likely moved only modestly, which is consistent with slow fleet turnover rates that have characterized the industry through multiple freight cycles.
