## Analysis

· as of October 15, 2026

### Highlights

- Freightliner holds 29.8% of FMCSA-registered trucks, more than the next two manufacturers (Kenworth at 13.1% and Peterbilt at 11.9%) combined.
- The FMCSA-registered fleet has a weighted average model year of 2016, meaning the typical truck is roughly 10 years old as of 2026.
- Dry van trailers account for 1,579,171 units, more than three times the count of the next largest trailer type, flatbed tag trailers at 549,262.
- Tank trailers carry the oldest average model year among trailer types at 2012, four years behind the dry van and reefer fleets.
- Battle Motors and White/GMC show average model years of 2024 and 2023 respectively, the newest averages in the registered fleet by a wide margin.

The most consequential pattern in this dataset is not who leads the market but how old the fleet is despite sustained new-unit registration in recent years. The FMCSA-registered truck fleet spans more than 4.5 million units with a weighted average model year of 2016, yet the age distribution shows meaningful volume persisting well into the pre-emission-rule vintages: model year 2007 trucks alone account for 143,944 registered units, a cohort now 19 years old. That figure is larger than the entire 2014 model year truck cohort (163,769), which itself is approaching the conventional replacement threshold. The persistence of pre-2010 units in active registration is consistent with small-carrier economics, where capital constraints make fleet replacement infrequent and older equipment stays on the road well past typical useful-life assumptions.

On the manufacturer side, Freightliner's 29.8% share is nearly equal to the combined share of Kenworth (13.1%) and Peterbilt (11.9%), a concentration pattern that has structural implications for parts supply and dealer network access across the carrier base. Volvo's 7.7% share is distributed across only 86,700 carriers compared with Freightliner's 315,094, implying Volvo's trucks are concentrated in larger or more specialized fleets, while Freightliner's footprint extends broadly into owner-operators and small carriers. Ford's 7.8% share, spread across 159,429 carriers, likely reflects light-to-medium duty commercial registrations rather than Class 8 linehaul, though the data does not distinguish by vehicle class.

In the trailer segment, dry van dominance at 1,579,171 units reflects the continued centrality of general freight in the U.S. truckload market. Reefer trailers (479,491 units, average model year 2017) are marginally newer than dry vans (average model year 2016), which may indicate faster replacement cycles in temperature-controlled operations, though that inference is constrained by the data available. Tank trailers, at an average model year of 2012, stand out as the oldest trailer category by a four-year gap, a pattern that is consistent with the long service lives typical in bulk liquid transport.

Zooming out, the 2022 model year truck cohort (309,201 units) is the largest single-year cohort in the dataset, likely reflecting the post-pandemic ordering surge that characterized 2021 and early 2022, when backlogs pushed deliveries into subsequent model years. Over the trailing decade from 2016 to 2026, new-model-year registrations have broadly outpaced retirement of pre-2010 units, leaving the fleet wider in total count but not materially younger in average vintage.
