[All snapshots](/data/safety/archive) ## Analysis · as of August 1, 2026 ### Highlights - Trailing 12-month commercial vehicle crashes fell 19.6% year-over-year, from 196,565 to 158,016. - Fatalities over the five-year period totaled 29,941, averaging roughly 499 per month across 60 months. - June and July 2025 were the two highest crash months in the dataset, recording 20,463 and 19,887 crashes respectively. - Hazmat-involved crashes in the trailing 12 months totaled 2,584, down from a peak monthly run rate seen in late 2022. - January 2026 recorded 348 fatalities, the lowest monthly fatality count in the entire 60-month dataset. The most notable feature of this dataset is the sharp divergence between crash volume and fatality counts that emerges in early 2026. Total crashes in January 2026 came in at 14,627, broadly in line with prior-year January figures, yet fatalities dropped to 348, the lowest single-month reading in the full 60-month series and well below the 557 recorded in January 2024. That pattern holds through the subsequent months: April 2026 logged 13,532 total crashes with only 323 fatalities, compared to 15,012 crashes and 510 fatalities in April 2024. The gap between crash volume and fatal outcomes widening in this way is consistent with either a compositional shift in the types of crashes being recorded, changes in reporting thresholds or lag, or underlying improvements in crash severity, though the data alone cannot resolve which factor dominates. The mid-2025 spike stands apart from the rest of the series. June 2025 reached 20,463 total crashes and 653 fatalities, and July 2025 followed at 19,887 crashes and 613 fatalities. Both months are the highest in the dataset by total volume, exceeding even the elevated readings of late 2022, when months like October 2022 (17,511 crashes) and December 2022 (18,042 crashes) had previously represented the upper band. The spike then reversed sharply: August 2025 fell back to 14,442 crashes, suggesting the June-July 2025 elevation was transient rather than a new baseline. On a year-over-year basis, the trailing 12-month crash count of 158,016 is 19.6% below the prior 12-month count of 196,565, a reduction of roughly 38,500 reported incidents. Injuries over the trailing 12 months totaled 84,956, and tow-away incidents reached 146,877, metrics that together indicate the volume decline is broad-based rather than confined to a single severity tier. The overall trajectory is consistent with a freight market that has been contracting from the elevated activity levels of 2021 and 2022, when volumes and crash counts both ran well above the early months of this series. Whether the 2026 fatality compression persists or represents a reporting artifact will only become clear as additional months accumulate.
