## Analysis

· as of September 1, 2026

### Highlights

- Fatalities per crash fell to a five-year low in early 2026, with January 2026 recording 350 fatalities across 14,664 crashes.
- Total crashes in the trailing 12 months dropped 19.8% year-over-year, from 195,601 to 156,968.
- June 2025 was the single highest-crash month in the dataset, with 20,547 total crashes and 654 fatalities.
- Hazmat-involved crashes trailed at 2,573 over the most recent 12 months, remaining below 1.7% of total crashes.
- Over five years, FMCSA-reported commercial vehicle crashes totaled 913,160, with 30,057 associated fatalities.

The most notable pattern in this dataset is not the level of crashes but the divergence between crash volume and fatality intensity: as total crashes fell sharply through 2025 and into 2026, fatalities per crash also declined, suggesting the two measures are moving together rather than inversely. In January 2026, there were 350 fatalities across 14,664 total crashes, a fatality rate of roughly 2.39 per 100 crashes. That compares to March 2022, when 665 fatalities occurred across 16,676 crashes, a rate closer to 3.99 per 100 crashes. The trailing 12-month crash count of 156,968 is down 19.8% from 195,601 in the prior 12-month period, a year-over-year decline that is among the largest in the dataset window. The second half of 2026 shows a steeper drop in crash volumes that is likely partly a reporting artifact: August 2026 recorded only 3,778 total crashes, well below any prior month, which is consistent with FMCSA data pipelines that typically reflect a lag between crash occurrence and record finalization. Analysts should treat the most recent two to three months of any FMCSA time series as provisional. Stripping out those trailing months, the underlying 2026 trend through June still shows monthly crash totals running below comparable 2022 and 2023 months, which may indicate reduced freight activity, improved reporting thresholds, or a combination of both. Tow-away counts have tracked crash totals closely throughout the period, consistently representing roughly 92 to 94 percent of total crashes each month, suggesting little compositional shift in crash severity at the property-damage end of the spectrum. The anomalous June and July 2025 spike, 20,547 and 19,908 crashes respectively, stands out against the surrounding months and warrants scrutiny before attribution to any operational cause. Across the full five-year window, the 30,057 fatalities recorded represent an average of roughly 501 per month, a baseline that the most recent months are running meaningfully below.
