    How to Evaluate a Carrier Intelligence Platform: A Buyer's Guide for Freight GTM Teams

    Most teams selling into trucking start by trying to build a prospect list from FMCSA data, realize the data is stale, incomplete, and full of duplicates, and then spend six months shopping for a platform without knowing what to evaluate. This guide is the framework we wish existed then.

    Who this guide is for

    This guide is written for go-to-market teams who sell into trucking. That includes sales, marketing, and RevOps leaders at companies whose buyers are motor carriers: telematics and ELD vendors, TMS providers, fuel cards, insurance carriers, factoring companies, maintenance and parts platforms, driver services, and the broader fleet tech ecosystem.

    If you are evaluating a platform that promises to give your reps better data about the 2.4 million motor carriers operating in the United States, this guide is the framework we wish existed when we started building AlphaLoops. It is vendor-neutral by design. You should come away knowing what to ask, what the honest answers sound like, and where the category's real tradeoffs are. If the framework leads you to a conclusion that AlphaLoops is not the right fit, that is a correct outcome of the framework.

    One thing to name up front: most of the existing "carrier evaluation" content on the web is written for shippers evaluating carriers for load performance. This is not that. This guide is about evaluating the platforms that give GTM teams intelligence on carriers as prospects and customers.

    Part 1: What a carrier intelligence platform actually is

    A carrier intelligence platform is a data and software product that helps GTM teams identify, prioritize, and engage motor carriers based on operational, technographic, and behavioral signals that go beyond what public FMCSA data provides.

    That definition is narrower than it sounds, because the space is full of tools that look similar from a distance but solve different problems. The easiest way to get oriented is to separate five adjacent categories that are often confused.

    Carrier intelligence platforms sit with GTM teams. The buyer is a VP of Sales or a CMO at a company selling products or services to carriers. The job is to answer: which carriers should we call, what do they run, and how do we win the conversation.

    Carrier vetting and compliance tools sit with freight brokers and shippers. The buyer is an operations or compliance leader at a brokerage. The job is to answer: is this carrier safe to book, and are they who they say they are. Tools in this category include Carrier411, Highway, MyCarrierPortal, and RMIS.

    Driver safety and MVR tools sit with fleets themselves, or with insurers underwriting those fleets. The buyer is a safety director or an underwriter. The job is to evaluate individual drivers, not fleets as prospects. SambaSafety is the best-known example. This is a different buyer and a different budget line from carrier intelligence.

    Generic B2B sales intelligence covers tools like ZoomInfo, Apollo, Clay, and LinkedIn Sales Navigator. These tools cover the entire B2B universe but have no specific depth on carriers. They know that XYZ Trucking has 200 employees and a Delaware domicile. They do not know that XYZ runs Samsara ELDs, operates 180 power units in the flatbed segment, pulled MCS-150 data last updated 19 months ago, and hired 12 drivers in Q1.

    Freight market data covers tools like FreightWaves SONAR and DAT iQ. These tools track rates, capacity, and lane-level market conditions. They answer "what is the spot rate Chicago to Atlanta today," not "which carrier should my rep call tomorrow morning."

    If you are evaluating a carrier intelligence platform, the alternatives worth seriously comparing are other tools in the first row. Tools from other rows may solve part of the problem, but you will typically end up buying two or more products if you start from the wrong category.


    Part 2: The data sources under the hood

    The quality of any carrier intelligence platform is a function of its data sources, how those sources are refreshed, and how they are stitched together. A vendor that cannot walk you through its data sources clearly is a vendor to be skeptical of.

    There are three layers of data that any serious platform combines.

    Layer 1: FMCSA public data

    The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is the federal agency that regulates interstate trucking. Every vendor in this category starts with FMCSA data because it is the authoritative public record of who is operating and under what authority. The FMCSA datasets that matter for carrier intelligence are:

    Licensing and Insurance (L&I). Authority grants, revocations, reinstatements, and insurance filings. L&I data is the foundational record of whether a carrier is legally authorized to operate. It updates roughly every two weeks in the public dataset, though authority changes themselves can happen daily.

    SAFER (Safety and Fitness Electronic Records). Carrier snapshot data including fleet size, power unit count, driver count, and operating status. SAFER is populated largely from MCS-150 self-reports, which means it is only as fresh as the carrier's last update.

    MCS-150 (Motor Carrier Identification Report). This is the form carriers file to register and update their profile. Carriers are required to update it every two years. In practice, many carriers let it lapse. Contact information, fleet size, and operating territory pulled from MCS-150 are commonly 12 to 24 months out of date.

    SMS (Safety Measurement System). Crash indicators, inspection counts, and BASIC scores. SMS data updates monthly and is the primary safety signal most vendors use.

    Inspection and crash data. Individual inspection records and reported crashes, available at carrier and driver level. These update on rolling basis as state and federal reports come in.

    FMCSA data is free, public, and accessible via bulk downloads and APIs. That is both its strength and its limitation. Any vendor that sells you "FMCSA data" without meaningful enrichment is selling you something you could get yourself. The question is not whether a vendor has FMCSA data. The question is what they do with it.

    Layer 2: Enrichment layers

    This is where vendors actually differentiate. The common enrichment layers are:

    Technology stack detection. Identifying which TMS, telematics, ELD, fuel card, accounting, and visibility platforms a carrier uses. This is extremely hard to do accurately because no public registry exists. Vendors build this through a combination of web scraping (job postings, carrier websites, LinkedIn), survey data, partner data from vendors in the stack, and inference from other signals. Accuracy varies wildly.

    Contact data. Finding the right decision-makers at each carrier. Email, phone, title. The hard problem is that carriers are heavily small-business, so LinkedIn coverage is thin, and most contact data products (ZoomInfo, Apollo) underweight the trucking segment. Good carrier-specific contact data requires dedicated sourcing.

    Growth and operational signals. Is this carrier adding trucks or shedding them. Are they filing new authority in additional states. Are they hiring drivers. Did they just change insurers or raise coverage. These signals come from pattern analysis across FMCSA data over time, plus external sources like job boards and state commercial vehicle registrations.

    Risk and fraud signals. Indicators of financial distress, chameleon carrier patterns, MC authority sales, double brokering, or compliance decay. Some of these are visible in FMCSA data if you know how to look. Others require scraping social media, court records, and trucking marketplaces.

    Firmographic enrichment. Standard B2B data layered on top: parent company, domicile, web presence, employee count, funding events for the rare venture-backed carriers.

    Layer 3: Proprietary and partner data

    The strongest platforms add data that is not available publicly and cannot be scraped. This typically comes from:

    Direct partnerships with ecosystem vendors who contribute aggregated, anonymized data in exchange for co-marketing or commercial value. This is how the most reliable tech stack data gets built.

    First-party surveys and outreach conducted at scale to ground-truth carrier operational data.

    Customer-contributed data where platform users share win/loss and operational data back into the system in exchange for better recommendations.

    Proprietary models trained on historical carrier data to predict things like churn risk, expansion likelihood, or technology adoption propensity.

    The honest truth is that the quality of any carrier intelligence platform is largely determined by how robust its Layer 2 and Layer 3 sources are. Layer 1 is table stakes. When you evaluate vendors, most of your effort should go into stress-testing what is in Layers 2 and 3 and how they know what they claim to know.

    A note on AI and MCP: modern vendors increasingly expose their full data layer through MCP servers in addition to traditional REST APIs, which lets AI agents query carrier intelligence directly. We cover how to evaluate that in Part 3, question 10.


    Part 3: The 10 questions to ask any carrier intelligence vendor

    This is the evaluation framework. Each question is designed to do two things: surface a real capability difference, and reveal how honest the vendor is willing to be about their own limits. The pattern that repeats across all 10 is that good vendors answer with specifics, and evasive vendors answer with marketing language.

    Question 1: Where does your data come from, source by source?

    What to ask. For each major data category you will rely on (authority, fleet size, tech stack, contacts, growth signals, risk signals), ask the vendor to name the specific source. Not "proprietary data aggregation." The specific source. FMCSA L&I. Job board scraping. A partnership with a named telematics provider. MCS-150 self-reports enriched with an email finder.

    Why it matters. Vendors who cannot or will not name their sources are almost always doing one of two things: reselling a competitor's data, or generating it in a way they do not want to describe. Both are problems. Reselling means you are paying a middleman and have no leverage on quality. Opaque generation means you cannot verify anything.

    A good answer looks like this. "Authority comes from FMCSA L&I, refreshed daily. Fleet size is a blend of MCS-150 self-reports and our own inference model from inspection records and job postings, refreshed weekly. Tech stack comes from three sources: web scraping of carrier websites and job postings, a partnership with [named vendor] for telematics data on fleets above 50 trucks, and customer surveys. Contact data is sourced through [named provider] plus our own enrichment, with SMTP verification at time of delivery."

    A bad answer looks like this. "We aggregate data from hundreds of sources." "Our proprietary data engine." "We cannot disclose our sources for competitive reasons." If a vendor will not tell a serious buyer where the data comes from, they do not deserve the buyer.

    Question 2: How fresh is the data, and how do I verify that?

    What to ask. For each data category, what is the refresh cadence, and what is the typical lag between an event happening in the real world and the data reflecting it in your platform? Can I see a timestamp on every record?

    Why it matters. The biggest failure mode in carrier data is staleness. A carrier that went out of business last quarter still shows up as an active prospect. A fleet that doubled in size still shows 80 trucks. A carrier that changed its phone number last year still gets called on the old line. Fresh data is the single largest determinant of whether your reps trust the platform.

    A good answer looks like this. Specific numbers. "Authority updates within 24 hours of FMCSA L&I refresh. Fleet size recalculated weekly. Tech stack detection refreshed monthly with real-time updates when a job posting signals a change. Every record carries a last_updated timestamp visible in the UI and API."

    A bad answer looks like this. "We refresh regularly." "Our data is always current." Anyone who claims continuously fresh data without naming the cadence is hiding something. The underlying truth in this category is that FMCSA refreshes on a schedule, so no vendor can be fresher than the source. Being honest about that is a credibility signal.

    Question 3: How do you handle carrier identity — duplicates, DBAs, and chameleon carriers?

    What to ask. How do you resolve cases where one carrier operates under multiple DBAs? How do you link a new MC number to a previous operation that was revoked? Can you show me cases where your system flagged a chameleon carrier?

    Why it matters. Carrier identity is the hardest unsolved problem in this data category. A single operator may have three DBAs, two revoked authorities, a current active authority, and an application pending. A fraudulent operator may rotate through MC numbers quarterly. If the platform treats each authority as a distinct entity, you will call the same operator three times and miss that two of them have revocation histories.

    A good answer looks like this. "We cluster authorities by shared officers, addresses, phone numbers, and equipment filings. Our graph includes about [X] million clusters covering the 2.4 million active authorities. We flag chameleon patterns when a new authority's officers or garage address match a recently revoked authority. Here is an example from our UI."

    A bad answer looks like this. Any answer that treats DOT number as a sufficient unique identifier, or that does not acknowledge the chameleon problem at all. This question also tells you how seriously a vendor has actually engaged with the domain.

    Question 4: What is your coverage of owner-operators and small fleets?

    What to ask. How many carriers in your database have 1 to 5 power units? 6 to 20? 21 to 100? 100+? For the smallest bucket, what percentage have verified contact data?

    Why it matters. Roughly 85% to 90% of US motor carriers operate fewer than 10 trucks. If your product sells into the long tail of small fleets and owner-operators, you need a platform that has meaningful coverage of that segment. Most generic B2B data tools skew heavily toward the head of the market because that is where their source data (LinkedIn, financial filings, web presence) is richest. Carrier-specific platforms should have inverted coverage, with deep reach into small fleets.

    A good answer looks like this. A real distribution. "Of our 2.4M active carrier records, roughly 2.0M are 1-5 power units, 280K are 6-20, 90K are 21-100, and 30K are 100+. Contact verification rate is 72% for fleets 20+ and 45% for fleets 5 and under."

    A bad answer looks like this. Total database size with no breakdown. "We cover every carrier in the FMCSA database." Technically true, but meaningless. FMCSA lists every carrier. The question is how much additional data the vendor actually has on each segment.

    Question 5: How do you source contact data, and what is the accuracy rate?

    What to ask. Where do contacts come from? How often is the contact data refreshed? What is your email bounce rate, and how is it measured? What about phone number accuracy? Can I see an example of contact provenance?

    Why it matters. Contact data is the single most commonly oversold thing in B2B intelligence. Every vendor claims high accuracy. Few vendors will define the denominator. "95% accurate" means nothing if the denominator excludes the 40% of carriers for whom no contact was found in the first place.

    A good answer looks like this. "Contacts are sourced from [named sources]. Primary contacts are refreshed quarterly; secondary contacts annually. We SMTP-verify every email at delivery time and report a 3% bounce rate on verified records. For phone numbers, we verify against line-type data and report approximately 85% reachable rate on primary numbers. We make our verification methodology public."

    A bad answer looks like this. A marketing-grade accuracy number with no methodology. "95% email deliverability" with no definition of what deliverability means. Answers that cannot distinguish between email format correctness (low bar) and actual inbox deliverability (real bar).

    Question 6: How does tech stack detection work, and how do I audit it?

    What to ask. For each category of technology you track (TMS, telematics, ELD, fuel card), where does the signal come from? What is your accuracy rate, measured how? Can I see your top-10 detections for a specific fleet I already know, so I can verify them?

    Why it matters. Tech stack data is the single strongest differentiator in this category because nobody has a clean way to measure it. This is also where vendors bluff the most aggressively. A vendor that claims "we know the tech stack of every carrier" is almost certainly inferring most of it with low confidence.

    A good answer looks like this. "Telematics detection comes from [three named sources] with different confidence weights. We publish a confidence score on every detection. Accuracy benchmarked at 82% true positive rate for telematics detections with confidence above 0.7, measured against a ground-truth sample of [X] carriers. Here is a carrier you know, and here are our top detections — you tell us which ones are wrong."

    A bad answer looks like this. Binary yes/no detections with no confidence scoring. Refusal to run a live audit against a fleet you already know. Claiming 99% accuracy without a methodology.

    A specific tip: for this question, pick 5 carriers your reps already know well and ask the vendor to pull their tech stack in real time during a demo. The gap between marketing claims and real output will be obvious.

    Question 7: How does CRM sync actually work — push, pull, and conflict resolution?

    What to ask. How does data get into my Salesforce or HubSpot? Is it push, pull, or bidirectional? What happens when your data conflicts with data already in my CRM? Can I control which fields sync? What is the sync frequency?

    Why it matters. This is where buyers get burned after signing. The demo shows beautiful carrier data. The implementation reveals that the sync is one-way, overwrites fields your reps manually edited, or creates duplicate records. CRM sync mechanics matter more than the data itself for daily usage.

    A good answer looks like this. Specifics. "Bidirectional sync. Configurable field-by-field. You choose which fields AlphaLoops owns and which you own. Conflicts default to the last-updated timestamp with an audit log. Sync runs every 15 minutes for delta changes, with full refresh nightly. We do not create records in your CRM — we enrich records you create, or you can use our Explorer to push approved records."

    A bad answer looks like this. "We sync with Salesforce" with no mechanical detail. Requiring an expensive middleware layer for what should be native. Push-only with no conflict handling.

    Question 8: What are my data rights if I churn?

    What to ask. If I cancel, what happens to the data that is already in my CRM? What about any exports I ran while a customer? Do I keep the data, or is there a clawback clause?

    Why it matters. Some vendors in this space include data deletion clauses that require you to purge vendor-sourced data from your systems on termination. Others claim perpetual rights on data you paid for. The answer should be in the contract, not in the sales pitch.

    A good answer looks like this. "Data already written to your CRM is yours. Exports you ran during the contract are yours. We do not require deletion on termination. The data you lose access to is anything that would have been delivered after termination."

    A bad answer looks like this. Vague language about "licensed data" that cannot be transferred. Deletion clauses buried in the MSA. Any answer that treats data you paid for as something the vendor still controls.

    Question 9: What does pricing actually look like at my scale?

    What to ask. What is the pricing model — per user, per record, per API call, flat? What does my usage look like on that model? What happens at renewal? Are there volume tiers, and where are the thresholds?

    Why it matters. Per-record and per-API-call pricing is a trap when your usage patterns change. Per-user pricing is predictable but can punish expansion. Flat pricing is simplest but often hides surcharges on things like CRM seats, API access, or integrations.

    A good answer looks like this. A concrete number for your specific scenario, with transparency on what triggers additional cost. "At your usage — 15 seats, 50K records synced, 2M API calls monthly — you are at $X/year on our current pricing, with no additional charges for standard integrations. Renewal pricing is indexed to the lower of [published list] and [your actual usage]."

    A bad answer looks like this. "We will put together a custom quote." "Pricing depends on your needs." Any pricing conversation that requires three calls before you see a number.

    Question 10: Does it work with my AI tools, and will it still work in a year?

    This is the question most buyers are not asking yet, and the one most likely to matter in 18 months.

    What to ask. Three things, at three levels of sophistication.

    Basic level. Do you have a documented public API? Can I see the docs without a sales call? What authentication does it use?

    Agent level. Do you ship an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server? What tools does it expose? How is it authenticated? Is it listed in the official MCP registry?

    Workflow level. Can a member of my team, today, pull carrier data into Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, or whichever AI tools they use daily? Have any of your customers actually deployed this in production?

    Why it matters. Two reasons, and both are worth naming explicitly to your committee.

    First, the interface between GTM teams and their data is changing. Reps and RevOps people are increasingly using AI assistants as their primary entry point to look up, filter, and act on data. A platform that can only be accessed by logging into a separate UI is becoming a chore, and chores in sales workflows quietly die. The platforms that will still be used daily in 18 months are the ones where your AE can ask her AI assistant "show me the top 20 Southeast carriers running Samsara that have added trucks in the last 6 months" and get an answer without leaving the assistant.

    Second, this question is a proxy for how modern the vendor's engineering actually is. A vendor with a real public API, clean docs, and an MCP server is a vendor that has been building for the AI-native era. A vendor with SOAP endpoints and a 2015-era login portal is a vendor whose product you are going to outgrow within the contract term.

    A note on MCP itself. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard, supported by Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, that lets AI agents discover and invoke a vendor's tools without custom integration code. A vendor that ships an MCP server makes their data and functions directly accessible to any MCP-capable client — Claude Desktop, Cursor, ChatGPT, and a rapidly growing list of others. In 2026 this is still early. In 2027 it will be expected. Buying a platform this year that does not have an MCP story is buying a platform you will need to replace or integrate around within the contract.

    A good answer looks like this. "Here are our public API docs, no gate. Our MCP endpoint is at [URL] and exposes [N] tools covering lookup, contacts, fleet data, safety history, scoring, and prospect list management. Authentication is OAuth. We are listed in the official MCP registry and in PulseMCP, Glama, and MCP.so. Here is a five-minute tutorial showing how to connect it to Claude Desktop. Three of our customers use the MCP integration in production today — happy to connect you with one."

    A bad answer looks like this. "We have an API" with no docs shown. "MCP is on the roadmap." "Our API uses SOAP." Any answer that treats the question as exotic rather than expected. Any vendor that cannot, today, show you a working demo of an AI agent using their data is a vendor whose AI story is marketing, not product.

    As an evaluation framework that extends beyond this category: any SaaS vendor you evaluate in 2026 should be able to answer three questions about AI integration. Does it have a documented public API. Does it expose tools to AI agents via MCP or equivalent. Can my team actually use it from the AI tools we already have open. Apply those three questions to every vendor in your stack, not just carrier intelligence.


    Part 4: Build vs. buy — when does rolling your own make sense

    A real question every serious buyer asks at some point is whether to build this in-house. The honest answer is that for a meaningful slice of companies, that can make sense. Here is the framework.

    Arguments for building

    You have engineering capacity and a data engineer who wants to work on FMCSA. FMCSA data is free and the download mechanics are documented. If you have a person who can own it, the raw data is accessible.

    Your use case is narrow. If all you need is a monthly list of carriers above 50 trucks in California that added authority in the last quarter, that is a SQL query against FMCSA L&I and SAFER. You do not need a platform for that.

    You are at a scale where platform pricing stops making sense. At very high usage or very long time horizons, a well-maintained internal system can beat per-seat SaaS pricing.

    Arguments against building

    FMCSA data alone is not enough, and the gap is expensive. You can build Layer 1 yourself. Layer 2 (tech stack, contacts, growth signals, risk signals) is a different order of magnitude of effort. Tech stack detection alone requires a multi-source scraping infrastructure, partnership agreements, and continuous accuracy tuning. A realistic internal build of tech stack detection is a 2-to-4-person team for a year to reach mediocre accuracy.

    Carrier identity resolution is harder than it looks. Deduplicating across DBAs, linking revoked authorities to new ones, detecting chameleon patterns — this is the part that eats the internal team alive. Most internal builds skip this entirely and live with the data quality cost.

    Staleness compounds silently. An internal build that is fresh on launch goes stale in six months. Without a dedicated data operations function, it degrades invisibly until reps stop trusting it.

    You are paying for the data team's time either way. The economic argument against buying is usually "we can do it cheaper." Once you add fully loaded engineering cost, ongoing maintenance, partnership development, and the opportunity cost of not building your actual product, the cheaper-than-buying math is usually wrong.

    A rough cost model

    For a mid-sized GTM team selling into carriers, the realistic all-in cost of a credible internal build is:

    • Year 1 build cost. 2 data engineers + 1 data scientist + 0.5 data ops + infrastructure + third-party data licenses = roughly $800K to $1.2M depending on geography and quality bar.

    • Ongoing maintenance. 1.5 to 2 FTE plus infrastructure plus data licenses = roughly $400K to $600K per year.

    • Time to first usable version. 6 to 12 months for a narrow build. 12 to 24 months to reach parity with a mid-tier platform. You will not reach parity with a top-tier platform; the data partnerships are not available to buyers.

    Compare that to a typical carrier intelligence platform contract for the same team, which is usually in the $50K to $300K range annually depending on scale. The build math only works if the platform contract is above roughly $500K per year, or if you have a very narrow use case, or if you have strategic reasons to own the data pipeline.

    The honest middle path

    Most mature GTM teams in this space land on a split. They buy a platform for the breadth, and they build specific analytical or modeling layers in-house on top of the platform's API or data export. The platform solves the 80% that is hard to build. The internal team adds the 20% that is proprietary to the company's ICP or sales motion.


    Part 5: Common buyer mistakes

    After watching dozens of GTM teams go through this evaluation, a handful of errors show up repeatedly.

    Buying on total database size. Every vendor in this space can claim 2.4M records because FMCSA lists 2.4M carriers. Size is table stakes, not differentiation. The question is data density per record, not record count.

    Skipping the live data audit. The single most reliable way to evaluate a vendor is to pick 10 carriers you already know and ask the vendor to pull everything they have on those carriers in real time during a demo. The gap between the marketing pitch and the actual output will be obvious. If a vendor refuses to run this audit, that is the answer.

    Optimizing for contact count over contact accuracy. A database with 5 contacts per carrier where 3 are stale is worse than a database with 1 contact per carrier where the contact is verified monthly. Reps lose trust fast after a few bad calls.

    Ignoring CRM sync until implementation. The data quality conversation and the CRM sync conversation are both essential. Most buyers focus on the first and discover the second during painful rollout.

    Treating integrations as a checklist. "We integrate with Salesforce" can mean anything from a native bidirectional sync to a CSV export with a Salesforce logo on the page. Dig into the mechanics before signing.

    Buying before defining ICP. The platforms in this space differentiate on different dimensions. A team selling to owner-operators has different needs than a team selling to enterprise fleets. If your ICP is not defined, you will pick the wrong vendor and blame the vendor.

    Over-indexing on UI polish. A beautiful UI with stale data is worse than a functional UI with fresh data. Reps use the tool for about 90 seconds per carrier before moving on. The UI needs to be good enough, not gorgeous.

    Underestimating the AI angle. See question 10. The vendor you buy in 2026 needs to work with the AI tools your team will be using daily in 2027. Most buyers are not evaluating this dimension yet. The ones who do are setting themselves up for a cleaner three-year run.


    Part 6: Glossary

    Authority. The legal right granted by FMCSA for a motor carrier to operate. Common types include Motor Carrier of Property (most freight carriers), Motor Carrier of Passengers, and Broker Authority. Authority can be active, revoked, inactive, or pending.

    BOC-3. A form designating process agents in each state where a carrier operates. Required for federal authority.

    BASIC scores. Behavioral Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories. Seven categories of safety performance scored by FMCSA based on inspection and crash data. Used as a primary input to carrier risk assessment.

    Chameleon carrier. A carrier that applies for new authority to escape a poor safety record, unpaid claims, or enforcement history under a previous authority. A known fraud pattern that FMCSA actively monitors but does not fully resolve. See our guide to spotting chameleon carriers for detection patterns.

    DBA. Doing Business As. A trade name a company operates under, separate from its legal name. A single carrier can operate multiple DBAs under one authority.

    DOT number. The identifier FMCSA assigns to every motor carrier subject to federal safety regulations. Used as a primary key for carrier records.

    ELD. Electronic Logging Device. Federally mandated device for recording driver hours of service. A major category of carrier technology spend.

    FMCSA. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The federal agency that regulates interstate motor carriers.

    ICP. Ideal Customer Profile. A GTM term for the characteristics of a carrier that best fits the product being sold.

    L&I. Licensing and Insurance. The FMCSA dataset that tracks authority grants, revocations, and insurance filings.

    MC number. Motor Carrier number. An operating authority identifier issued by FMCSA. Distinct from DOT number.

    MCP (Model Context Protocol). An open standard, supported by Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, that lets AI agents discover and invoke a vendor's tools without custom integration code. See AlphaLoops MCP server for an example implementation.

    MCS-150. The Motor Carrier Identification Report, a biennial form carriers file to update their registration profile. The primary source of self-reported fleet data.

    MVR. Motor Vehicle Record. A driver-level record, not a carrier-level one. Used by fleets and insurers, not by GTM teams targeting carriers.

    Owner-operator. An independent motor carrier operating one or two trucks, often driver-owned. Makes up the bulk of the 2.4M US motor carrier population by count.

    Power unit. A single tractor or truck capable of towing. A common measure of fleet size.

    RevOps. Revenue operations. The function responsible for sales technology, data, and process. Usually the technical buyer for carrier intelligence platforms.

    SAFER. Safety and Fitness Electronic Records. The FMCSA system that surfaces carrier snapshot data including fleet size and operating status.

    SMS. Safety Measurement System. The FMCSA system that publishes BASIC scores and underlying safety data.

    TMS. Transportation Management System. The core operational software carriers use to dispatch, plan, and manage freight. A major category of carrier technology spend and a common target for GTM teams.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Can I just use ZoomInfo or Apollo for trucking?

    You can, but you will be missing most of what matters. Generic B2B sales intelligence tools cover company and contact data broadly, but they have no depth on carrier-specific signals: fleet size, power unit counts, authority status, tech stack, safety history, growth patterns, or fraud indicators. The smaller the carrier, the worse the coverage, which is a problem because most US motor carriers are small.     Why isn't FMCSA data enough?

    FMCSA data tells you who is operating and under what authority. It does not tell you what technology they use, who the right contact is today, whether they are growing, or whether they show fraud indicators. Most GTM use cases need Layer 2 and Layer 3 data — tech stack detection, current contacts, growth signals, risk scoring — that FMCSA does not provide.

    How often should carrier data be refreshed?

    Authority and insurance data should be refreshed daily or at minimum weekly. Fleet size and operational data should be refreshed at least monthly. Contact data should be re-verified quarterly. Tech stack should be refreshed monthly with event-driven updates when signals change. Anything less frequent is going to cause problems your reps will notice.

    How do I evaluate tech stack accuracy?

    Pick 5 to 10 carriers you already know, and ask the vendor to pull their tech stack in real time during a demo. Check how many detections are correct, how many are missing, and whether the vendor publishes a confidence score. This is the single best test and almost no vendor will refuse it. Any that do are telling you the answer.

    Do I need an MCP server or is a REST API enough?

    Today, a REST API is enough for most teams. In 18 months, an MCP server will be table stakes because AI agents will be the primary interface to sales data. Vendors without an MCP story today are at risk of being replaced when the interface shift happens. If you are signing a 2- or 3-year contract, weight this heavily. See question 10 above for the full framework.

    How do I measure ROI on a carrier intelligence platform?

    Three metrics are most commonly used. First, pipeline generated from carrier segments the platform surfaced that your team would not have targeted otherwise. Second, conversion rate lift on targeted accounts vs. untargeted accounts. Third, reduction in rep time spent on research. Most buyers see the largest gains on the first, not the second or third. Expect 3 to 9 months to see meaningful ROI signal depending on sales cycle length.

    What about data privacy and CCPA / GDPR compliance?

    Most carrier data is business data, not personal data, so GDPR scope is limited. Contact data for named individuals at carriers is in scope. A serious vendor should be able to articulate their legal basis for processing, their data subject request workflow, and their subprocessor list. If they cannot, that is the answer.

    Can the platform handle my CRM customizations?

    Usually yes for Salesforce and HubSpot, which are the two most common. Custom objects, custom fields, and lookup relationships are all typically supported, though the mechanics vary. Ask specifically about how the vendor handles your exact customizations, not whether they support Salesforce in general.

    What does implementation timeline actually look like?

    Clean implementation for a standard Salesforce or HubSpot setup is usually 1 to 3 weeks from contract signature to reps using the data daily. Complex implementations with custom objects, data migration, or heavy ICP modeling can take 6 to 12 weeks. If a vendor quotes "instant" implementation, ask them to walk through the first 10 days in detail.

    How do I convince my CRO this is worth the spend?

    The frame that works best is not "better data" but "better rep time allocation." A rep who spends 30 minutes researching a carrier before a call is a rep who makes 8 calls a day instead of 20. Platforms that compress research time have a direct, measurable impact on top-of-funnel activity and, downstream, pipeline. Build the business case on rep hours saved and call activity lifted, not on data quality abstractions.

    Should I pilot with one team first or roll out everywhere?

    Pilot with one team. Always. The teams that roll out everywhere at once rarely see the platform used consistently because the change management load is too high. A focused pilot with one segment of reps, clear success metrics, and an explicit 60- or 90-day evaluation period produces far better decisions. If the pilot works, expansion is easy. If it does not work, you learn cheaply.
